bought a Master lock to play with

I understand how locks work and all and wanted to learn how to pick locks -- I have the tools and I bought a lock to play with it's a master lock (I think it's a 14D7 if I remember correctly) So I start picking; well after a while it felt like all the pins are set I was gently brushing them with the hook and sure enough they were all set...they felt very lose, and not springy. I'm wondering why the lock didn't turn if they were set? I did add a little more tension since it has a spring in there when you turn it, nothing happened...so I SLOWLY let of the tension, and I could hear the sounds of the springs poping back into place...

what am I doing wrong here

You probably got a few spool pins in there. Once you have all the pins "set," just push up on them one by one. If you push on a pin, and the plug wants to turn back to neutral, you've identified a false set spool pin.

Okay, any suggestions on how to pick spool pins? This lock I bought is just to play around with and learn the basics...

Basics? Skip this lock then. Try a kwikset deadbolt for learning the rudiments of picking. Get a Brinks house key rekeyable padlock to learn spool pins. It has spool and normal top pins. In each case, pin them up, one pin stack at a time. Pick eacy set a few hundred times, then add a pin.

I'd have to agree with Chucklz here. You'll want to start out with a kwikset deadbolt. It's best to start off with something simple, so you can learn how to feel if the pins are set or not. Picking spool pins is just a refinement of this sense of touch.

Also, are you sure you are picking the lock in the right direction? It sounds like the pins could be all truly set, but the lock might not open that way. Trust me, I've had that problem before. If you are picking it it the correct direction, then yes, there probably are spool pins.

When you are starting out you have to learn the basics first. Get proficient with a basic lock without spools like Chucklz suggested then move on.

If you really want to know how to pick spool pins then search the forum there are many threads that talk about security pins.

Okay I've read some about spool pins. The best way to deal with them would be to find out where they are...then after I "set" them I'll slightly let off of the tension wrench and push upwards...right?
