Help! Locksmith Certification

Postby steve0527 » 26 Nov 2007 12:38

Hi I was wondering if any of the online Locksmith Certificate programs. The ones you work at home and they mail you the course info and you do the exams at home. Are they any good or if they are even any good to help me become a Locksmith. In Ontario, Canada I found out that Locksmith is not considered a Trade :o . I think thats stupid  So if i do one of these courses will it help me or not. I was told that i could go around and ask if any of the Locksmith shops are taking on any apprentices and learn it that way, but im not to sure what would be my best choice of action. Please Help.

Thanks...

I recommend that you do not become a locksmith. You should go to a University, or at least back to high school and learn how to form complete sentences. Unless you are a successful small business owner or have been in the business for many, many years , as a locksmith you will only make enough money to support yourself. Good luck supporting a wife and children.

According to this website, the average locksmith/safe tech makes between 25,000 and and 38,000 dollars a year.

A public high school teacher makes between 30,000 and 67,000 a year.

Doug not everyone is good at spelling and grammer. You must be a really ignorant person to put someone down for that, and I went to Georgian College for fine arts and business. I have 2 two kids and a fiance, who is going to University of Western Ontario. Money's not a problem, we have enough money. I just want to get a Career in something I like.
Thanks for your help Doug, nice to hear from you.

I'm sorry Steve. I just find it irritating when somone with 12 posts jumps on the site and explains how they want to become a certified locksmith, and pursue a career in locksmithing when it is obvious they have done very little research on the subject. Also keep in mind that you posted in the wrong part of the website, and used poor grammar. This caused me to have very little respect for your and so I treated you the way I did. It's just that there are many threads already on this site that answer your exact question. After reading over those threads then maybe you might have a specific question or two that some of the locksmiths on the site could help you with?

I don't have the time to do that, I get around 1 hour a day to do anything. When you have 2 kids a job and a Woman you don't get any time to your self. Sorry

Steve, I can't speak for the online courses but you may want to look at the Foley Belsaw course. May fit your time schedule.....

I currently am doing the course, my reasons being that I wanted to learn more about things I don't work with on a daily basis, and some form of certification.

I figure it don't make no mater how many posts n such ya make if-in ya want to know how's ya gonna find out if-in ya don't ask? (to be spoken with the Festus sortta drawl :) )

As far as how much lockies make......I wouldn't know.......I do know they sure don't make anything from my employer as I'm an instutional guy and unfourtunate for me the more I $ave the instution, usually the more I get a kick in the rear, but non the less I sleep well at night..........

Today I changed 2 light ballasts, got a Trane Voyager roof top unit running (draft motor seized up, we'll see if the boss remembers to order a new one), figured out why another unit heater was not working for a seasoned colleage, updated and backed up 5 access controll doors, built 2 new cores for another facility and called it a day..........

As far as my spelling...........as long as I am involved with anything there is the potential for human error............

I bet we have another electrician on the board. :D

I have taken the FB course also. If you have time each day, Expect to complete it in about six months. You can take longer if you like, The time frame is up to you, And your schedule.

You will not learn everything you need from FB. It is a great starter course, And you do get a piece of paper that says you are a 'locksmith.' Just be smart about opening a shop right away. You need some 'in field' experience to prepare you for the locks/callouts that the public expects you to be an 'expert' in.
