Buying Lockpicks

Postby falkman » 6 Dec 2007 22:03

I made my own lock picks for a while, but I didn't have the right tools, and they would break and/or not work. I know how to lock pick, I've picked over 50 different locks but most of my picks end up broken, especially when I get a little too cocky.

I live in Wisconsin, and I've done some research and it looks like you can have them as long as they are inside your own home (correct me if I'm wrong).

The point is, is that I want to buy some lock picks, probably from lockpickshop.com since this website recommends them.

So, I was wondering, when I buy lock picks, is my purchase monitored (do they put me on some sort of list saying that I have bought lock picks), or is it simply I buy them, and I can only get in trouble is if I go outside my home with them.

I wouldn't worry that much. Wisconsin has a lot better things to do rather than bust people on "lock picks" and "burglary" tools.

Unless you're a kid and toting them around everywhere you go, I wouldn't worry at all.

Your purchase won't be monitored. What are they going to do? "Uhh yes Judge? Someone in our town ordered lock picks online, can we get a warrant to go bust them?"

Cops have much better things to do and are constantly busy.

You're safe. Happy picking.

Theres no real reason to worry. You can take them outside of your home. Just make sure you don't advertise the fact that you have them on you or put yourself in any suspicious position where it gives the police any good enough reason to give you a hard time. But try not to make it a habit to carry them where ever you go just to be safe.

And most online pick suppliers will probably keep some small amounts of info on you but they don't keep an extensive database of info on every customer they hand out to law enforcement or to the government everyday.

Lockpicks.com I'm sure keeps some info for their own marketing purposes. I think thats why they sometimes send me stuff for free like small replacement parts for more expensive tools and equipment cos I've been their customer for years. It's not always a bad thing that they keep some sort of record.

But ultimately if you are not planning on doing anything illegal or otherwise stupid and risky, no one can lay a finger on you technically. Just use it at home or at lock sport meets on your personal time for fun and strictly for a hobby and you'll be ok. I was picking locks and buying locksmith tools online for eight years before I started working as a locksmith and I never got in any trouble.

Ever since 9/11 the government has been monitoring ever single lockpick that has been sent out in the mail. They have the phone numbers, social security numbers, and home addresses of every lockpicker that is even a member on this forum. So your probably already in their vast computer system anyways.

I hope you're joking. Since I can't sense tone I'm left to wonder.

Yeh, I just ordered a twist tension wrench, a small diamond, a small hook, a S rake, and a W rake, from lockpicks.com, what is the average time it takes to ship them using the normal shipping service?

If you're in the surrounding states, maybe 2 or 3 days. If you're on the coastal side, further away east or west probably a week/week and a half.

This is why I order from lockpicks.com as much as possible since they're only about 300 - 400 miles away from L.A. so I get my stuff from them in just a couple days if I wished to pay for a best possible shipping.

Well, im in wisconsin so I think it would be a week then. BTW I looked and those look like the most common picks, are there any others i should be aware of? I do lock picking as a hobby so just padlocks and deadbolts, nothing special like wafers or w/e.

You really should'nt worry. I ordered from lockpickshop and when you receive your box, it won't say "LOCK PICK!" or "lockpickshop" or anything similar it will simply be written "Locksmith Tool" or "Locksmith Supplies". Even when they replied me a email to tell me they had shipped it and the first line goes like this "Thank you for ordering from Locksmith Parts & Supplies." =)

Oh, no im not worried about that, i was just wondering if those picks will do it for what i want, or if there are any other picks that are important.

But yeh, i know what i can do always... just say its a christmas present and noone can look at it, so that part is covered.

~Thanks,
Falkman

I live on the east coast (a few miles north of Washington, DC) and both orders I placed with lockpickshop.com arrived in only 3-4 days.

My SouthOrd order took over a week.

(I love my LAT-17 Snap-gun and my TP-ECO-7 and TP-ECO-8 tubular lockpicks though!!!)

Those are a good set. I do picking as a hobby also. I have picked things from padlocks to KIK's and even my lockbox (makes me re think how secure they are). But anyway I have a small hook, small half diamond ( I use this mainly) a C rake, a double ball (not used that much) and a tension wrench.
So I think you set is great, and should be perfect for what you are doing as a hobby.
Happy Picking
