I've heard mention of "offset diamond" picks. What are those?

Thanks guys! It appears to be, basically, a hook with a half-diamond tip.

I was imagining some really bizarre contraptions :D

I just made one the other day. I pattern mine after the Rytan one. If I remember, I'll bring it home and post it. Imagine a thin half diamond turned up a bit about .5" from the end of the pick. It can serve for both a half diamond and a modified hook. It is one of my favorites for certain autos and small keyways.

I typically call it the Deforest and sometimes, thanks to Emrys, the "Pick of Destiny". Oddly, I also call this (Peterson Gem): http://www.peterson-international.com/i ... em_Tip.gif a Deforest when its not the slender type. As for the real Deforest, I'm beginning to like to more and more lately. The one I have is the Southern Specialties plain ripple handled (i.e: finger cutter) that Schuyler was handing out at Defcon. It feels like its a lot easier to get in there without oversetting low pins in low/high configurations.

thanks schuyler

I got one from schuyler, and made a nice pick out of it with just some sanding, then I made a pick out of the large hook blank he sent also, had to file the shaft width down some then sanded it and rounded off those sharp edges, now they work pretty well.

I always tell my new guys that the cool thing about making picks is that "if you make a really popular design, then you can call it whatever you want, and everyone will be forced to call it that for the lifetime of the popularity of that pick". It's cool, cause you can leave your mark on the lock picking world just by naming a pick something weird. Like "deforester" or "Bogotá" :)

So rai, did you come up with the original Bogotá design and then come up with the name too?

sweeper bristles

Postby raimundo » 15 Dec 2007 11:16

I found a good quality long sweeper bristle in the gutter in one of those narrow cobblestone streets near downtown bogota and made four picks out of it in two pairs. Long time ago

I always wondered where the name came from.

I think the reason why it is called a deforester is because of the way it is shaped. It looks like something that you would use to de-forest an area. Like a shrub cutting tool. Thats why it is called a deforester.
