It is actually personal preference, and what you are best at doing. Personally I don't like raking, don't practice it very much, and therefore don't have much of any luck with it. I prefer to pick each pin with a hook pick.
Once you do have a false set with your rake, switch to a regular pick (hook, diamond, ect) and finish picking it with that.
Also, it is a good effort to start with a lock that has security pins in it, but if you are just learning and are getting frustrated with not being able to pick the lock, try to find a lock that does not have security pins in it so you can get the feel of how pick a lock. A cheap Kwikset or Master lock work well for learning. Once you can consistently pick an easier lock, then try playing with the spool pins.
