Is this a good starter pick set for US locks?

Thanks in advance,

No, you don't need more than 4 to start out with. Save yourself time and money and buy a diamond, ball, and rifle rake. Buy a simple "L" tension wrench. That's all you need and it'll only run you $10 with s/h, maybe cheaper.

And no, if you buy an HPC or Southord brand pick they won't break easily. They're made of quality steel.

Got the set today and so far I like them. But when I tryed to pick my master#140 lock the picks seem to be too large. Could it be that they are just for door locks and not pad locks?

Thanks in advance,
Nox

Im pretty sure u didnt try all of them :)
Some of mine fit in..

Anyway, the 140 has a tight keyway so it makes it abit hard..

and the 140 is 1 hard lock anyway maybe pick something else first :)

Couple of things that might help :)

When you first get your new picks they need finishing to remove all the sharp / rough edges with wet and dry paper. A tip I found here is a folded sheet of wet and dry between the pages of a book works really well (sorry I can't remember who posted that idea).

Second is that once your picks are finished, if they are still tight in the keyway then place your tension wrench in the top of the keyway to leave more room for working the pick.

Didn't go through them all, made a hasty assumption

I picked the 140 with the small feeler pick (looks lke a little hook) in about 4minutes (pin by pin ofcourse)

Thanks for the input,
Nox

Do you mean they stay bent up or are the two flexible?

You know people ask this stuff all of the time as I did. I would recommend starting out with a Peterson City kit and working your way up and building your kit. You will begin to advance very quickly at one point and will probably want to try more tools. These higher quality kits can be built upon very easily. You are also getting the best IMHO and considered by many other in the profession and industry. At some point in time if you stay in the hobby or join the profession you are going to upgrade to these guaranteed.

Looks like an interesting pocket set to carry with me. Any idea how thick they are compared to Europeon picks?
