acetone ----- It will not do any harm to the brass or steel springs-- some plastic's will melt or be efected by it ----- you can do test put what you wish to test in a jar of acetone then later see what happens to it ----

acetone

Postby raimundo » 13 Jan 2008 9:31

acetone may be ok for cleaning, it will quickly evaporate, but unlike some other cleaning stuff, it dosent usually come in a pressureized can so getting it into a lock without taking the lock apart may be a problem. Don't smoke while using it.

Here is another thread about lubricants on this forum. Hopefully this will help. It has many members talking about the different types of lubricant they use.

acetone?

Postby raimundo » 14 Jan 2008 11:13

did you mean that you put the locks in acetone in a plastic container?

That might not work well

when you have the locks off the door, there are a lot of solvents possible to use, kerosene in a metal container is one of them, but it still would require disassembly and some wiping or scrubbing.

hi ray.
it is not door locks that i am soaking.
they are padlocks that i went over the top with wd/40.
i know now that it is a freeing agent not a lubricant. took them out tonight a lot cleaner and free inside the plug from stickiness.
have given each one couple drops 3in1. :)
