I'm a bit embarrassed to be making a post on what most would probably consider something trivial, so i'm throwing a few questions in so i don't have to bore everyone with mutlitple topics.

1.) I'm going to attempt to make some warded lock picks soon, could someone provide me with dimensions?

2.) I'm the owner of a southord mpxs 32 set, and i rather enjoy it, but my picks are starting to get a little worn. I've tried my hand at making picks but i think i would like to see what Peterson picks are like. I notice they have rubber handles, does this impair feel at all? For those "in the know" how would you compare southord to peterson. A good healthy descritption of the pros and cons of peterson picks would be welcome.

3.) While picking my master combination lock (keyway in the back) I notice when i pick it perfectly i set the pins a total of 8 times, yet there are only 4 pins? Is this just something im missing, or am i mistaken and not acctually setting hte pins the first time? (only happens with my master combos....)

With warded picks I simply use a keyblank that has been cut down so it's shaped like a "T." If you look at the key blank, you will see there is already two notches (one on each side). Cut all of the metal away before those notches and you have your pick.

I've not used peterson picks, but rubber handles shouldn't change much of the feedback. It's certainly not going to help- but I doubt it makes much of a difference. They are probobly nice for extended periods of picking- as metal handles can make your hands sore after a while.

You set the pins a total of 8 times with only 4 pins? I'm not sure, but my guess would be that after you pick one it comes back down again without you noticing... or something lol

Here you go, part 1. Warded picks

Those are 1:1 scale, and I've never had a problem with them.

Part 2. Peterson rubber handles. I have used Peterson picks, and they are quite good. I also currently have some Ilco picks which use similar handles, and the feel is excellent. The rubber while flexible doesn't significantly dampen the feel.

Part 3. The combo lock key. It's been my experience that picking such a small keyway often cause false sets, and dropped pins. Just when you get 1 & 2, 3 causes 2 to drop. I try to find what I call the first set pin. It's the pin that catches first, and trends to stay when you pick the other pins.

peterson also offers their picks with a plastic handle(blue in color) which do transmit feel slightly better than the rubber handled picks(black in color).

There's no darn fun in that. :lol:

To top it off, you have to buy a lock. These things are so easy to find at yard sales and flea markets without keys for like 25 cents that it isn't worth it to buy a new one.

Now, if you find them for a quarter with a key, that's something.

I just dug out the key for my Brinks warded lock. I'm not sure if i want to keep just the last parts on the blade. The last notch is 1/4 an inch in length followed by the smaller notches.

Poor at best, but i htink you can see what i mean. The last pin on the right is way bigger htan the others. should i just grind that down to size?

I just used a couple key blanks from the locksmith shop i'm apprentising at (with the locksmith's permision of course)

What's the overall length of the peterson rubber gripped? I don't have any 'full size' picks, so I don't really know, all I have is a mini set. Also, about how thick are the grips.

I'm asking because i'm thinking of getting the 'just picks' set and a couple other items, and i'm wondering if these will fit in a hard eyeglass case. I like the case because it's got that soft-feel lining and it's spring loaded to keep it shut tight, and protects from possible 'bending mishaps'
