eBay's Master Padlock Key Generation

Postby Eyes_Only » 3 Mar 2008 6:25

Anybody ever tried this product? The seller told me that impressioning is part of the techniques used to generate a key for the #1, 2 & 3 Master padlocks with the use of depth/spacer keys but wouldn't devulge any further info on his/her teaching method. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :IT&ih=009

what a frickin scam..

I think all you need the space and depth keys for is to compare your filing marks on the blank you're impressioning to see if you are inbetween cuts or filed low enough to a particular cut depth.

imho

I'd be curious too about this one. Can't imagine any locksmith bothering to impression a cheap and widely available lock. Even if it did work in 10 minutes every time labor costs and key blank costs would make it more expensive for the customer than buying a new lock.

Yeah, thats why every time someone brings in a padlock like a small Master I tell them it's cheaper if they bought another one than having us make a key for it.

But then sometimes you just have older padlocks with no keys lying around you could sell if you had keys to them. That was the situation last Friday when I took home a bunch of padlocks with keys missing at work to work on them at home. Made keys for four padlocks in 25 minutes. Now we can sell them.

our problem is that we have so much used stuff (a lot of it is old and hard to find, but equally unlikely to sell for the same reason) that we don't have room for stock. But as long as you don't have that problem you're right. It's nice to have something to do in those quieter times.

Linty, couldnt you put all that antique hardware on the internet, the idea is that there is so little call for it, and when there is, its hard to find, but the great locator that gets people together with the need meeting the parts, seems to be ebay or craigslist, but for such things a lock hardware, there could be a dedicated site that all locksmiths would look on when trying to locate out of production parts. the kind of list where things are available for a long time until the need occurs to be met.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

I can only see this being practical if the customer has a ton of keyed alike locks and somehow managed to lose every key for them.
