MPXS-14 vs JPXS-6

Postby SolidAnchor » 14 Jun 2004 18:56

Well this is my first post. So if you haven’t already guessed, I am new to LP101. I'm Canadian, live in Ontario and picking locks has always been something that interested me.

I cannot craft my own tools seeing as how I don't have the resources nor do I have the basic craftsmen ship skills to make them.

So my question is for a basic set of lock picks to mostly learn with and use for pad locks and house locks, which would be better? The MPXS-14 or JPXS-6?

My opinion is that the MPXS-14 is a better kit but I can get the JPXS-6 off of the SOUTHORD OUTLET for cheaper. So is it comparable for performance?

If you search for Jacknife, you will see a wide range of opinions on that kit. But, if you really are into saving money, buy a few individual picks.

i have both, the MPXS-14 is definatly a whole lot better and worth the money. exspecially if you are just learning to pick locks.

the jackknifes have poor feedback and arn't to practical... they are more for looks and convienence then anything. sure they work to pick locks, but you can't beat a standard set of picks.

If you are just starting to lockpick, I would avoid picks with large handles, poor feedback. But thats just personal pref. Otherwise southord is great, slimlines my favorite.

I would go with the MPXS-14 over the jack knife pick set. The standard set offers a better variety of picks to choose from and practice on so you can learn which tools and style is best for you. And CycloneJack is right, these jack knife sets are too bulky and cumbersome to learn picking properly on. Trust me, you'll be soooo glad you chose the MPXS-14 instead of the jack knife set in the long run.

What to buy?

Postby Romstar » 14 Jun 2004 22:28

So, I pop on over to the SouthOrd Outlet and see what they have this week.

Lo and behold, under the 32 piece set is the MPXS-20-O, price: $29.95 US
Only five dollars more than the jack knife, and way more serviceable. In addition, it comes with more tension wrenches.

If you are looking for a cheap set, direct from SouthOrd this is the one.

Just to be complete, I poped on over to www.lockpickshop.com to see what the price was on the C1510 set. This is a euro/japan slim line set, and currently sells at this website for $39.95 US.

Now, that's a significant amount, and to make things worse you have to deal with exchange rates and other stuff. No biggie if you are sure you are buying from the US.

Now, here is the catch about why I recomend the euro/japan set. Canada is a very funny place. We have so much American influence you might begin to think that we were a collection of states. The problem is, we don't get all of our stuff from the US. A lot of it comes from Europe and Japan. This includes locks. :?

In addition, for practice you will be using smaller locks frequently. Things such as padlocks have smaller, tighter keyways. The euro/japan set make these easier to deal with.

Since they work with both normal locks, and smaller locks this is your best all around set.

For cheap, get the MPXS-20-O, for a great all around set get the C1510. Just stay away from that silly jack knife.

You could also buy picks individually from their online catalog. I got a set of 5 slimlines, from southord, for only 12 bucks (U.S) plus shipping. The slimlines with metal handles cost around 3 dollars each I think.

I understand what you mean with the Jackknife, it's cool, good as an extra pocket tool but in the end the standard metal handed picks rule.

I was looking at the C801 set; I believe it can provide what I am looking for. Thanks for all your help everyone.
