So i have been picking for about a month, I have a small set from Southord. I have picked some simple padlocks and a Master #3. But i recently got a BEST padlock and i cant pick it. Whether i SPP it or i rake it, what eventually happens is all the pins look set but it doesnt open. Obviously i dont know enough about picking.. thats why im asking here.. I dont detect a false set. is it possible that BEST locks dont have a security pin? what could be the problem if all the pins are down but its not opening? Thanks.

Good luck, most BEST locks are masterkeyed, and failing that have a control key to change the IC core.. So there is more than one shear line.. (so whats hapenning is your picking more than one shear line, binding the lock so it will not open/work)
best thing to do is mail me the lock.. and I'll mail you something easier back.

Read this. SFIC By Matt Blaze It will help you understand how an SFIC lock works and why it's very, very difficult to pick unless you have the proper tools, alot of skill, and a metric ton of luck.

That's because you're messing with a BEST lock, which has two shear lines and to get either to work, you have to line up all pins to one or the other.
What's happening in your case is that some pins are binding in top(control) and some pins in bottom (operating). When you tension the lock, the torque is applied to both both shearlines. To pick BEST, you usually use a tension wrench that grabs the control lug and apply torque selectively to control shear.

All the pins being pushed up doesnt make the lock open. So the question is.. do they just look set, or do they feel like they are set? or are they in fact actually set.
Try light tension on that padlock, and whatever distance you're pushing the pins up with your hook or rake, reduce that by 50%. As mentioned more than likely it is master pinned, which doubles your chances of hitting one of the several shearlines, but if you push all the pins all the way up, that will reduce your chances of hitting one of the shears.
good luck!

I must be doing something wrong all together because the same thing happens to me sometimes with my Master#3. I see all the pins down but the lock doesnt open. so besides the BEST lock having multiple shears, I am consistently doing something that makes all the pins set (probably not really set, they just look set) what can i do to check if they are in fact set properly in the shear?

in your master No.3 you are probably OVERsetting the pins, which is when you push the key pin up into the shearline...which makes the pin "disappear"...when a pin is set you should still be able to see it and push on it and it should press back(or fall rather) with no resistence....
Just keep letting off tension and starting over when you get stuck, its WAY better to pick it twice and it only open once than to get mad at it and make it harder on yourself.
