Master Lock Magnum

Postby camdenb » 14 May 2008 0:59

I am able to pick just about every lock in my house but I recently picked up a master lock magnum and just cannot get it. I have tried raking and SPP and when i let off tension I almost always hear four pins drop. Is it possible that there may be security pins in there?

Just to make this clear, I know NOTHING about this lock...

To check for security pins, keep going until you're stuck (make sure you're not too heavy on the tension) and the last pin you set, if no other ones will bind, push it up. You should feel (if there is a security pin) a reversing effect on the tension wrench (as you push up the pin, your tension wrench wants to move back a little) just let the wrench move back, but don't release tension (just keep it light) and just take it nice and slow. After that, just keep going I suppose. If you set every pin and suspect one may be a false set on a security pin, as the plug will not turn, try pushing each pin to check for the reversing effect.

Failing that, of course I sometimes (not usually) have a wierd problem where I pick a lock just fine but the plug doesn't turn... turn your pick upside down and give it a bit of a blind jiggle using the underside of the pick.

Good luck

Just found that 4 second CG animation showing picking a spool pin, detailing the reversing effect and showing why it occurs... very nice (found it by accident)

masters

Postby raimundo » 14 May 2008 7:16

I saw a video on You tube in which a guy is picking a series of different models of masters and knockoffs, he seems to find that a smack on the shackle into the lock will open many of them. He seems to put the pick and tensor in, work the pick very little and then he hits the shackle of the padlock and it opens. I can only figure that perhaps its actually some kind of overlifting and the smack is the thing that drops the pins to the shear line. I don't have the link, the last time I used links to Youtube videos, they came out wrong. But if you can find it, it may suggest another thing you could add to the things you are trying on this lock.

@raimundo- thats like a mix between bumping and overlifting, when you smack the shackle it bounces the pins and the pick+tension wrench keep help set the pins and keep them set.

search for things like 'padlock shackle bumped' and 'shackle bumping' on YT you will find LOTS of examples.
