Personally...

I would have to say it depends on the lock and how you're going to pick it...

But here are my 4 favorites in no particular order
1) Short Hook
2) Snake
3) Half diamond
4) and this rake that southord calls and L rake http://southord.com/catalog.asp?cat=locksmith&rowstart=90 that rake is excellent on door knobs... I dunno why.. but it just is.. I love it...

if I were going to buy a new pickset that is probably all I would buy, and a bunch of tension wrenches...
I wish the world was flat like the old days, and I could travel just by folding the map.

Those are all good picks! I find that a lot depends on where you like to put your wrench. I like a medium hook when I try wrenching from the top of the keyway so I can get a bit of leverage.

Deforest and reach are excellent shapes as well! (Not for cutting down trees or brushing your teeth, BWAHAHAHA!)

Bagota style rakes can be pretty effective as well!

I use a simple diamond and a hook most of the time. Don't forget that a hook can be used for raking with good results on some locks. (pull-raking technique..) I have one particular kwikset that I can get with one pull sometimes :) It's pretty funny, but not as satisfying as pin by pin. :D

I think I am going to start on making some of the sawtooth rakes and the W sawtooth that have been mentioned previously and see how they do for me. Thanks for reminding me to make some new shapes guys!

:D

diamond and hook are also my favorites but i also have had alot of success, on kwicksets, with a majestic w style rake its just like the southord but not as tall i use it kinda like a hook and whamo... sweet results. but your right it is more satisfying to pick pin by pin.

The sawtooth generally only works on locks without a large difference in pin height... You get a setup with a short pin in between two long pins, and you have to be lucky to pop that lock... I like to start with a quick raking of a saw tooth, and if all but maybe one of two pins set, I single pick em...

skolt, I have a question for you. You are the only one in this thread who seems to use the double ball. I never used it (although I have tried a few times). So, what do you use it on? :D

I personnaly think the lifter pick is by far the most interesting one to use. I have one from an un-remembered brand that falls in between the southord shirt hook and the long hook. I found that one brilliant.
I love the feeling of slowly raising a pin and feeling it raise above the shear line and pop the lock open :D.

The snake rake pick (again, not from southord) is also an all time favourite for raking. The one I have has one more bend than the southord and for some reason seems to work better (note: I do have the southord tools but don't like them as much, especially the tension wrenches).

Took me a long time to use a half diamond. I only used it for simple low security wafer locks initially. Then I realised it works quite well for locks with limited entry (in height).

Now I'm going to try the L rake a bit more due to popularity.

I have tried inserting various other tools in locks without much success. It looks like my first buy of an 8-piece set (very well made and great tension wrenches - wish I could remember who makes them) is by far much more useful than my 24 pieces southord set.

UPDATE!: :)

I made a couple Sawtooth rakes and I must say I was impressed when I popped my American series 40 by raking a few times and then setting the front pin! I can open that particular lock in less than 30 seconds almost everytime that way! It has no spools but does have lots of serrated pins. (Possibly all of them) Before the sawtooth, it would take me at least 3 or four minutes to open this lock single pin. I still practice single pin on this lock, but at least I know I can pop it quick with a sawtooth... I still need to try a W-Rake and many other rake shapes. I also had pretty good luck with a triple half diamond rake where the first half diamond was larger than the other two. :) Great fun! Another interesting fact is that this is the first American brand lock that I can rake so consistently. The bitting is relateively close together, but the serrations seem to make that a curse when picking single pin.

The Sawtooths that I made work well on good old master locks with a rocking technique! :) So I guess they could be considered rocker picks if you want. They certainly can be used that way! :)

(L-Rake? Doesn't sound right to me!? Sawtooth seems more correct, but it is good to know what other names things go by... Most of the other names seem to make sense.)

Made a couple random rake shapes and they were a little too large, but they worked well on a couple BEST SFIC locks!? Go figure! :)

I've yet to really experiment with ball shapes, but it could be interesting. I'll have to look for pics of what a ripple rake looks like as I am not certain what they look like, although I can guess.. Might have to make one or more of those as well. :)

I still prefer a simple hook or half-diamond, but I am adding a sawtooth rake to my idea of a useful pickset. I find it useful even though I don't use it all the time. ;)

It sure is good pickmaking research to read other's thoughts about different shapes and how they like to use them. ;) Thanks to everyone who posts about the subject!

I like the short hook and the snake. However, there's something that's bothering me. What is a double ball pick used for ?!
