cloning a kwikset or schlage?

I have a few cheap cylinders that I would like to re-key and continue practicing my picking skills, Is there an easy way to tell if they are Kwikset or Schlage clones? Also I have a Kwikset key depth guage do I need different ones for different lock makers or are key depths universal.

Until you learn them by sight, try a key from each company in the cylinders and see if they fit. Generally speaking, the kwikset plug face shows that it is a rough casting (then you can memorize the keyway itself ). The schlage plug is machined smooth.
As for the depth gauge, you will need one for each manufacturer, they use different pins/depths.
