GM tryout set ID help

Postby ToolyMcgee » 6 Aug 2008 20:12

Sorry. I know this belongs in automotive, but I don't have access. I'll try to keep the questions very public forum, but delete it if you must.

I just need to know which set of GM tryouts I have. The person I bought them from didn't know anything about locks, keys, etc. and everything I turn up on the web isn't helping.

This is the only factory writing on the box.

They don't look like current GM key blanks, so I fear they may be older. I would say maybe a locksmith cut them himself from generic blanks, but there isn't one key with any stamps and they are in a box that looks factory. Obviously I can't get automotive search results here, but if someone could tell me if I have a 1967-1987 set, the Old style set B10/B11 keys (1935-1966), or something different entirely I would be greatful.

I'd post the whole set of 64 because they are so pretty, but I don't wanna push my luck.

I dont think this subject is for the advanced form...

From what I know most try-out keys stopped working in the late 80's... Search around google images and see if you can match what you have with what you can see.

I don't think it's advanced for him to ask what set he has. Just no discussion on how to use them. For what it's worth your set is so old the only place they will be useful is at the scrapyard.

Yes, freakparade, that is the confirmation I was looking. Thanks for being a wiseguy about it. Even the newer set is basically worthless at this point, just less useless... Scrapyard or not they only cost me a buck!

So shiny. That alone is good enough for me. Maybe I can help out somone's great grandpa someday...

Test: Yes, I looked around many, many places. All I could get were catalog #'s. No pictures of the older set. Just "Old style set B10/B11 keys (1935-1966).

So the GM cars that were still using these old 6 cut sidebar door locks in the early 90's are not easily compromised by any try out keys?
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

not star

Postby raimundo » 9 Aug 2008 7:31

I have an old set made by star, and the blanks have star logo coined onto them. these look like copies, on generic blanks, that dosent mean that they are in any way less, the box has a fairly professional marking on it, its printed and back in the day, printers were'nt everywhere,

Do you have 64 of them? or how many are in the box?

these would be handy around old car collectors meets. and usefull in cuba or other SA countries

Thank you raimundo for confirming they are on generic blanks like I thought and indeed an old set. I do have all 64, in the factory box, on the original chain with the original little brass tag, and probably only used a handful of times. Only until Monday though.

Hello, I know this is an old post but thought I would put in my 2 cents. I have been doing a little research and saw your post. I have been looking for a set like you have. You actually have a set of original brass tryout keys for 1935-66 GM vehicles. These were actually put out for use by locksmiths since it has the box tag and chain. Do they have numbers stamped on the back? If you ever wanted to part with them provided you still have them. I would be interested. Enjoyed the post.
