The infamous safety-pin :)

Postby Nightshadow » 24 Aug 2004 11:04

Hi!

I am a real newbie and just got interested in lockpicking. Just started 2 days ago and read 2 e-books about picking locks. I also got quite motivated, because it seemed to me as if I understood how things are going. Well ... let me say it like this: The locks at my home made me quite disappointed.

The things i used were a screwdriver for the tension and a safetypin ... i suceeded in finding the pins. When i move the pin through the lock i can easyly differentiate between 5 different bolts. Things start to get complicated when i insert the screwdriver.
I am from germany, so the bolts are located at the bottom of the lock. When i use little tension it seems like it doesn't effect the lock in any way. And if i try like really hard it happens that 1 or 2 bolts get stuck, because they finally pop back out when i release the tension. I don't know if i actually "broke" them or if i just held them down with the tension.

So my questions for now:

Am I just too dumb to open the lock?

Are these german locks really HARDCORE?

Are my tools even less worthy than a piece of c*** and a few picks could finally lead my way to victory?

So, what could be the problem? The point is, that i really want to learn it and i am ready to buy a pickset ... what i don't know is, if the picks will change anything. I know that i will be like REALLY pissed off when i finally got these picks at home and nothing changes :shock:

Maybe it is just the little time i practiced. Yesterday night i tried it for about 1 hour and this morning i spent another 1,5 hours on my frontdoor. It gets really annoying after a time ...

Thanks for help:)

Hi there,

Sounds like you need some proper tools.

Am I just too dumb to open the lock?

I don't know you well enough...Maybe! However, what's more likely is that you actually need to buy a small set of picks to start out (Half Diamond, Short Hook, Maybe a rake and a few different tension wrenches) then go and buy some practice locks and practice ! Search the forums for what they look like, where to buy etc...

Are these german locks really HARDCORE?

Doubtful...but it really does depend on the lock itself, maybe post some pictures or a description?! Most locks are pickable but you do need the relevant experience and knowledge in order to open them. Search the web for the MIT guide to lockpicking (if you've already got it and read it then read it again....and again...and once more.)

Are my tools even less worthy than a piece of c*** and a few picks could finally lead my way to victory?

Yes...get some decent picks, picking with a paperclip in most cases is futile and will only end in you crying in corner like a baby because you can't do it!...Search the forums or the web for places to buy picks.

step 1: get the cheapest 60mm euro cylinder lock you can get. DON'T practice on the locks at home, you don't want to call a locksmith to clean up the mess you eventually make

remove some pins from the lock, it makes beginning a lot easier. looks like you're motivated, make yourself some quality tools then :)

If it takes alot of tension to set a few pins. try a little silicon lubercation on the lock.

Hi!

Thanks for your replies!

@Billy

Good statement ... i already read this guide twice and i think that i really got the principles right.

picking with a paperclip in most cases is futile and will only end in you crying in corner like a baby because you can't do it!

You're probably right ... i was close to kick the safety glass out of the door after these 1,5 hours without ANY result:D

Sounds like a little set could really help me ...

@Teus
Thanks!
I didn't really know that it is possible to mess up the locks ... i'll try to get some others for my practice
