I have a question. Are the positions of security pins in a lock random? Or are they predetermined?
I ask this as after curiosity got the better of me I took my front door yale lock apart to look at the keying. I found that it contained 2 spools. However, the positions of the spools were such that they would not engage if being picked. That is the pin heights where the spools were, were 8 and 9 giving the spool the same feel and function as an ordinary driver (the thin part of the spool never went beow the sheer line).
So the process of placing security pins is either random or someone at the factory got it wrong, which is it?
Thank you in advance for any insight.
Jimmy
