PXS-14 Lock Picks

Postby Regalis » 23 Sep 2008 12:28

Greetings,

Just registered on this forums after a couple of days of lurking around and reading up on all those faqs and guides (which I must say are quite impressive). I just started lock picking and ordered a set of PXS-14 Lock Picks plus some padlocks to start with. My question is if I did a good thing buying those picks. I don't have a clue on what might be a good starters set but I bought the PXS-14 as it's quite cheap. I didn't want to make them myself since I have absolutely no experience with locks and picks a.t.m.

So can you guys give me some feedback on this and say if I bought some worthless junk or some nifty picks?

It's a better idea to ask for advice before buying don't you think? :P You made a good choice however.

Indeed it is but I just couldn't wait to buy some so I rushed to my local internet shop to order them. Unfortunally I didn't bother to look for any ratings/reviews about them so I was hoping I made a good choice :D

It's a perfectly good set, you can simply dump 12 of the 14 parts and use the rest :-)
Think yourself lucky, I got the MPXS-62 when I first started, all I had to do was dump the 60 odd useless bits of stainless steel in a neighbours bin when they were not looking and I was left with the useful remaining tools !

Undeterred, I got the Falle Safe set, all I had to do there was chuck the whole kit over the nearest fence and the job was done, but that's a different story!

It's good kit, you will never use half of what you got, but only you can find that out.

Enjoy :-)

It's a decent set. As you've already heard though, you'll wind up with two, maybe three pieces that you actually use.

I just got the same set in the mail. I'm a newbie at picking but I have gotten them to open a few padlocks so far :D

I wouldn't throw your "extra" picks away just yet...

Certainly everyone is right about you having bought a good set and that you will probably only use 2-3 of them.

However, I tend to think that most picks have been designed because someone, somewhere found a use for them at some time. So in my early days, I only ever used a hook pick and single pin picked everything.

Eventually, it semed a shame to have other picks and so I started trying them out on the locks I could easily pick already. I learned a lot that way. Learning to use a rake was almost as painful to learn as learning to pick my very first lock was. It was a completely different set of skills I had to learn. I still prefer a simple hook pick as that seems to be my "Natural", but whenever I have a slack moment, I'll sometimes pull out the old favourite locks and try picking them all with a pick I've never used before, or don't like using. It's hard work learning new ways of picking, but I believe it's good for me to learn more for when I come across those locks that don't like hook picks, or being SPPed.

Nah, hold onto all of your picks and get really good with your "natural" first, then try learning other methods with the other picks. I'm sure you will be better for it - If a little frustrated! I am still amazed at the results some can get with rakes and so am using them a lot at the moment to build my skills with them as they are my "second" and I'm just not as good with them as hooks.

I got the Southord MPXS-62 like ranger did and don't regret it. Sure, there's probably 50 picks in there that I don't use, but like Engineer said, it's probably just because I haven't found the right use for it yet.

For a subpar jackknife at that :P That removable screw is just begging for trouble.
