problem with some tumbler locks

Postby jakers » 6 Oct 2008 2:13

i am new to lock picking but am very interested in it, and as expected im trying to get as much practice as possible. I have made a diamond pick for my use with small locks and keep running into a problem; whenever i pick some locks, the pins all seem to be set but the lock cylinder does not turn. i am turning to torque the correct way and am aware of the safety pins, but for some reason some locks just do not turn even though all the pins appear to be set. If i release torque i hear the pins come back down and everything. This is most common in my case with very small bike locks. Oddly enough i am able to pick a commercial master no. 5 with no problems!
any suggestions? Am i overpicking the locks?
thanks alot!

Overpicking, quite possibly yes. If you lift just one of those pins too far it is never going to open. Make sure you're not applying too much tension and dont have to force the pins up, any amount of force can result in an overlift quite easily.

If all the pins feel "set" are you sure that the bottom pins are still free to move? They will feel almost imperceptible but with some concentration you should be able to just about feel them. If one is missing or doesn't move, you've an overset for sure.

Good luck!
