Auto Lock Servicing Manual

Postby davidgjr » 8 Sep 2004 9:27

Is there a book that covers the different types of auto locks and servicing (not picking or unlocking)? I would like to hit up some auto body repair shops . Say for example, If the body shop are repairing a car that had been rear ended and the trunk smashed up, I could go by there and pick up their locks and/or sell them new locks rekeyed to the doors or the rest of the car and bring them back. I just want a book that explains getting the lock cylinders out and so forth. I realize with all the different cars on the road it would be a large book, but any reference I get right now is better than none. I have the Fast Facts book to find the keying kits and so forth. I just need a reference to know more about servicing. I hope this post makes sense to you. I am just trying to figure a way to earn some more income and thought this would be a good idea. Thanks everyone for their help. :D

Try Motor, Haynes or Autodata.

There are a couple of others, but these should start you out.

They are BIG, BIG books.

The best teacher is a junk yard though. Once you have taken a few of these out from various makes of cars you begin to see a lot of similarities in construction.

Then, you just have to focus on the locking components which do vary not just across different makes, but also different models.

There is also the Autosmart series. They are geared more toward the automotive locksmith. You can see their ads here:

Or you can see them at The National Locksmith's online store. You might also consider joining The NLAA for a year. I'm debating whether or not to join them myself or apply for ALOA membership.

I got the fast facts 2004 , which Iheard was pretty much the same as autosmart. I heard there is a Hank Spicer book called Auto LOck Servicing, but I cant seem to find any info on it on google or yahoo.
