Tubular Pick Problem

Postby Urbex » 12 Nov 2008 12:05

I'm having a problem with my HPC TLP-C B seven pin tubular pick, or impression tool to be more correct.

Three of the feelers are too loose and I can't find a way to tighten them up. When attempting to pick a lock they'll slide up too far, while the rest will set the pins correctly. I've taken it apart and removed all the lubrication, then reapplied it only to the other four tight feelers and still have the same problem. I've also tried switching the feelers around in case those three were too thin, but the problem still continues in the three spots.

Anybody who has had the same problem and found a solution, I'm listening.

Another possibility is that the tubular lock you're trying to pick is something like an ACE II, which uses springs with different spring constants precisely to frustrate cheaper tubular picks (aka the ones that don't have adjustable tension on a per-pin basis). Do you know the make/model the lock you're trying to open?

I've found the solution to the problem, it was the small metal collar that presses against the gaskets. One side of the ring is completly flat while one side is rounded, I had the rounded side against the gaskets resulting in uneven pressure.

The lock in question was an ESD, but the problem also occured on an American cylinder.

I really don't mean to point any fingers, but I sincerely hope that you own that lock. ESD doesn't make locks to my knowledge, so much as they stamp their name on the locks they sell in their commercial laundry coin box products. A picture of the lock and where it's used would be somewhat reassuring.

There's a picture of it, although it serves no use.

That's about all the reassurance I can give you with the exception of you physically coming to my house

these locks and other brands that people associate with large institutional systems do come on the used markets. Just the brand name of a lock is not much to go on. Eventually all brands of locks become available, some even while new and un used.

Photoshop!
Anyone could have done that.
I would be happier if you run to the coin box on 11'th and 3'rd at 6 PM and answer the phone, then run on to 44'th and 2'nd at 6:10 to the coin box on the left. Answer the phone and hold the lock up so I can see it :-)

lol, very funny :P Anyway that's probably a pretty decent lock as far as the tubular ones go, I would imagine that it's a rebranded ACE or something similar given that it almost certainly occupied a washing machine at some point. Urbex, have you taken it apart to see if there are any spools or different springs? All in all, that's probably a pretty fun lock.
