Hi there. New to this site I have for some months tried to learn how to pick padlocks, but without luck.. lock.. get it? hahaha.. ahem.. sorry.. I've read several turtorials and guides, and watches numerous vidoes on the internet, but i have yet still not succeded in picking my own lock.. I have bought a Southord pick set with ca. 8 picks, and 4 tension wrenches, but even these dont seem to help.. I know how a lock funtions and what i must do, but the pins... just... wont... set! :S Please, is there anyone outthere who can help me? Thanks in advance

Get a deadbolt that you can easily disassemble so you can work with single pin stacks to start with. Follow digital_blue's lockpicking exercises on this site to get started. What type of padlock are you trying to pick? It could be that you just picked something unbearably hard to start out with.
I'd recommend some Masterlock padlocks or a Kwikset deadbolt to start out with.

I have tried different locks, but all seem impossible..

A deadbolt is a lock that you would put on your door that has a large deadbolt that moves from the inside of the door to the inside of the door frame. it generally has no "knob" on the outside, just a keyway and is generally able to be operated by a little knob on the inside so people dont get locked in.
Just go to the hardware store and buy the cheapest door-lock there.

Not if you buy a Kwikset, and "not really" if you buy anything else. dg

As a note, if you are looking for beginner locks, don't buy a Kwikset if it is one of their "Smart" line of products which they are gradually moving over to. These use an entirely different mechanism that isn't quite for beginners...

I just checked out my local hardware store, and the cheapest deadbolt costs 46$... That is way to expensive :S It the Ruko series and they dont seem to have anything else.. Also, a question: how do you put in springs and pins in a deadbolt without messing up? I have tried with an older one, a 5pin deadbolt, and I just can get the pins in place... I have to hold the springs down and then try to push the hull back in without the springs jumping up :S Fails every time! Any suggestions?

goto home depot or lowes and get a kwikset brand double-deadbolt. u can even get the knock-off kwikset, cause they are made by them too. it should be no more than 15 bucks.

You need a plug follower

Check out yard sales or flea markets. You would be surprised at what you can find there for cheap.

While we're on the topic of where to get cheap beginner locks, be sure to check and see if there is a local Habitat for Humanity ReStore in your area, or other construction reclamation businesses. You're almost certain to find a good price on some new / used locks there. I think the luckier of us have averaged something like $.50 per lock at the ReStore.
I'm actually surprised no one's mentioned this yet, it almost always comes up in threads like this.

In re lowes hardware etc, the guy went to the hardware store and could only find a Ruko, therefore he's in Denmark. Flea markets are a good idea, or perhaps Ebay, where people sell bags of old locks sometimes, Or he could just find old Rukos and sell them to hobbiests on sites like lp101

thank you for replying all.
Still not sure how to remove pins from the deadbolt?
A plugfollower was mentioned? What is that?
I've tried to use steadyness and paperclips to hold the springs in place as i put in the hull, but it doesnt work. The hull gets stuck and the springs often get damaged..
Yes, im from Denmark, but i will try to check out Ebay. thanks
