Pins on top and bottom - how to pick

Postby Milsurp » 17 Dec 2008 8:35

Hi all, new guy here. I've had this 5piece southord kit since I was a kid (~12 years maybe?) and had not once picked a lock. I'm not sure what possessed me but I dug it out yesterday, found some youtube videos and found this place. An hour or so later, voila! I've picked the lock on my front door! My fiance didn't seem as excited about it as I did though.

So anyways I've got this cheap stack-on gun cabinet. It takes a key that has bumps on both sides. I've been working on it and the pins (which are more like bars) are easy to set but I haven't quite gotten them all. The tension wrench is of course in the way of one of the rows of pins, but I think I'm getting them all with the hook and diamond picks. I feel like I'm getting close but it's hard to tell. Any tips? Am I missing something?

your lock "seems to have bars" I interpret that as a disc tumbler. Is there a name on the key, like chicago lock co or illionis lock co. ? If so, and if its not a Duo, you probably have an easy lock. use the half diamond pick and put tension at the center of the keyway, stroke the half diamond lightly down one side of the keyway, then the other, do not use heavy tension as that only binds the lock tighter.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!
