It measures the tracer wheel and the cutter wheel so they are set to the same depth in a key cutting machine. The the tracing wheel is not at the same distance to the key blank as the cutter wheel, then you will end up cutting your keys too deep or too shallow. I believe it may work on a continuity loop. If the keys are seated all the way and you lift the carriage so the cutter wheel is just touching the blank, then you adjust the tracer wheel until it just touches the other blank key and the light or a buzzer goes on.

That about all I could come up with accept for the fact that the code cutter itself is all metal and will complete the circuit.... right? so i guess the rest of that nonsense is some code software hes giving you? anyways thanks for the input

The key cutters vice jaws are not always electrically conductive. For example the black oxide coating doesn't conduct electricity.

The method I use and a cheap one too is to use two blank fitted in the jaws and at the back of the guide is usually a turn knob to adjust the depth. Tun the knob till you hear the cutter gently touching the cutting blank. Machine set :!:

Easy

Better to measure first that the blanks are identical, as there can be 0.1mm differences in (some) blanks.
