if i had a safe at home that had a key way AND a key pad would i be allowed to ask this question:.. Is the lock a bypass incase you forgeet the code or do you need to have the code and key to open it?.....
Dont wanna get in trouble thats y i made this post rather then asking the actual question with pictures etc
does this still count as advanced as im not actually asking how to open it?
Cheers Danny

It depends on the make and model. Some safes have a key hole in case the batteries are dead and you can't type in the code, or forgot the code. Some need both credentials to be presentented, the key, and a code, in order to open the door. Squelchtone

If you had such a safe at home, wouldn't you already know if you needed the key to open it ? Since it's not about how to open it, I guess you already know how.

ok the story is my dad brought this safe for me at a liquidation sale from an office company..there are no keys and no one knows the pin num...the plan was is to open it rekey it or change the locks and then sell it on as its in mint condition and 900 bucks NZ new ( he paid 40 for it )..plus it was used as some sort of deposit box and you can hear what sound like coins rolling round in it ..so as im waiting for my new picks to arrive( mine were stolen) i wanted to know if i can open it with out the pin num or its pretty much useless.

Take it to a locksmith, that way you'll know precisely what's needed and how much it'll cost to get it open. Now I don't know much about safes, but if it costs 900$ I'm pretty sure you won't be able to bypass the lock with a safety pin/paper clip.

Well post a picture of the safe and we know better. BUT, we will not go into conversation about picking that lock or how to find out the missing combination or anything else related to opening it, unless this moves to advanced forums.

Most probably you will need the key along with the PIN, as there is no handle and a key would work as a handle quite nicely

There is a phone number on the front. Have you tried calling them ?
They could probably answer your question and give you an over the phone estimate to open it. They might even be able to cut you a key from their records.

I wouldn't give up on them just yet. Get your dad to call as he is the one that bought you the safe. Also, if they follow up as they should, he is the one with the details, phone number, address, record of sale or credit card perhaps, all that stuff that they can check.
It would be so easy if they could cut you a key from records and mail it out. Not sure how far they are from you, but perhaps get a picture or two of you standing by the safe and drive over to see them. Take your pictures and your records.
If you can pick this thing easily and get instruction over the internet to open it, it wouldn't be much of a safe would it ??

You cannot ask how to open the safe manipulation wise/ drilling wise/ picking wise etc. If you are just wanting to know for sure if you have to have the combination AND a key then I think it would be just fine for you to ask a question like that.
The big thing is, just don't let the thread go to a "how to open this safe by means other than the combo and key". In other words, don't ask how to generate a key or how to obtain to combination and you'll be fine.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!
