what do I need to start an automotive locksmith business

I know you need a lockout kit, pick set,van permits and licensing but I don't know what else is entailed regarding tools or other info.I have a diploma from a locksmith course and think this would be a good field to start in.In Vancouver, Canada where I live there is no apprentice training schools and I don't see myself working for a few years in a locksmith shop at the age of 42..why I painted for 10 yrs. is beyond me.I have read some blogs where the people who started in this field from scratch mentioned low overhead and start-up costs.I don't know how well they do but it is what I would ideally like to do.
I heard of one person who gained his practical experience prior to starting by renting Hertz and other rental cars and spending the day using different methods of opening them.It sounds very unconventional but it is experience.Behr seems to be the only automotive locksmith specialist in Vancouver so I am sure there is a market for this. The other locksmith stores I called pawned me off to towing companies. The pricing by a locksmith seems to be $50 for opening and $65 service charge..between 8-5 pm,and much more after hours.Plus I don't think most people with expensive cars want a tow truck driver working on there car if they have another option.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Roger

You might have more luck looking through the locksmith business information section and posting there. Scan the posts from the last few weeks, and if you don't find what you are looking for post there to possibly get a better response.

Never mind, I see you have already done that. Try not to post the same thread topic twice. It can become confusing. Good luck

Car work has become much more specialized over the years if your looking to actually make keys. It requires expensive equiptment and the blanks aint cheap.

Doing just lockouts is alot cheaper to get into but the yellow pages exposure etc. to get the calls is again expensive.

Maybe call AAA and see who they use for lockouts in your area..
Or check some local lockshops and see if you can ride along for awhile.
