what to pick after 5-6 pinned schlage and kwikset locks?

Postby rogerbp » 31 Jan 2009 16:58

I have got those locks picked fairly well, both spool and reg. pinned.I found these through a lockpick shop so I guess they are key in knob removed cylinders.I want to make a gradual progression to higher security locks and automotive locks and would like to know what to work on next.I know about the Medeco but I'm not ready for that yet.
Thanks for any help,

Roger

Depends on what is available close to you. You can often pick up old automotive locks at a scrap yard. Or you could check out the local auto parts place. You might be able to buy a new car door lock for less than $20. Try to get some security pins like spools or serrated. Put them in a deadbolt lock that you can buy locally. That should make it a bit more of a challenge.

Thanks barbarian.
I'll try that for auto locks. Can you buy serrated, mushroom or other higher security pins from a lockpick shop that can be put in an EZrekey lock.I forgot to mention I have one of those.I want to work on all styles so any info is useful to me.I have a deadbolt on my front door and so far can only rake it open.Is pin by pin a skill that needs to be constantly practiced even when you want to work on other styles?

Don't pick locks that you rely on, especially not your front door!

As for progressing, I would recommend that you get a *real* Schlage deadbolt. The rekeyable practice locks are great for learning, but often their tolerances are not as good as the actual locks. This is because of how the rekey is made, which company actually manufactured the cylinder, etc. Once you can open the off the shelf 5-6 pin Schlage with several security pins you can move up to the Schlage Everest or a Medeco. You can also look into higher tolerance standard locks, such as BEST, EVVA, ASSA, etc. If they have additional security features, such as the ASSA sidebar, you can always remove them to work your way up. The same goes for Medeco.

Check out an auto junkyard, the kind that allows you to pick your parts, you can practice on some doors, buy some locks and pickup some used wipers at the same time. should be cheap. pay the guy a little and he may let you practice openings on the cars.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!
