what to do

Postby laf » 4 Feb 2009 18:09

hello lp101,

I received today my mpxs-14 lock pick set and im very happy. I have a dudley padlock that I can open most of the time very fast. My question is: why sometimes it can take me 5 minutes to open it and sometimes 3 seconds?

Also which pick do you try at first? Rake first then SPP but wich rake pick (2ball,ball,diamond,snake rake?)

sorry im a noob.

are you experiencing this with the same pick and tension wrench? if this isn't the case then it might be that one pick/ wrench combo just works better with that lock. If you are using the same tools, then check the amount of tension you use because that will affect your time too.

For just starting out it's probably better to SPP because its going to help you get a better mental picture of whats going on inside of the lock instead of raking, not to say you shouldn't rake though. Also for choosing a rake to use I suppose it's whichever you feel most comfortable with, or works best :)

Try to imagine what is happening inside the lock instead of just getting it opened. If you can feel each pin set, it will help you when you get more locks to practice with. Sometimes people learn a way to open a specific lock without really feeling it. Maybe they get lucky with a certain pick and method, that won't really help you when you start with other locks.

Try to pick your lock with each pick you own. If you can get it easy with the diamond, then try all the other picks too. Learn how each one feels and it will help you with difficult locks in the future. If you can't seem to rake the lock, practice raking until you learn how.

Get some more locks to practice on too. Each lock seems to be a bit different.

I always single pin pick. Rakes to me are like mopeds and fat chicks, they're still fun to play with but I never let my friends see me do it.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!
