I am a noob and I use a 14 piece set (MPXS-14) wich I think is very good.

I started out with southord, but then moved up to hpc, a good site is lockpickshop.com, If it were me, starting to pick again as a beginner I would buy a small hpc set to start with, they cost a little more but they are worth more than southord, they are made better, feel better and will last longer.

I think an HPC set with a hook, half diamond, snake rake and some tension wrenches are all you need to start! That's it; three picks but good quality. I like Peterson tools too. The slim line Euro picks are excellent.
