Advice on what lock to try to pick next?

Postby SiderealLacuna » 17 Mar 2009 15:37

I have been picking for about a month now, and I can open 5-pin (all spools) Schlage cylinders. I also just picked my first Master No. 532, and have successfully picked it three more times with an average of 7 minutes. I am not sure what I should try next - I want something challenging, but not overwhelming. I have an American 5200 padlock, but I'd really like to get a UL 437 cylinder. In your opinion, am I ready for this from what you have heard, and if so, which should I choose? If not, what could I buy that would be more of a challenge than the Master No. 532 and the spool pins in the Schlage? TIA!!

I would stay away from ul437 right now. Master the basic mortise and rim cylinders first, Corbin/Russwin, Yale, Sargent and the like. They all have their own traits which will help when you finally move on to ul437's

Since you can pick spool pins try the 5200, CW and CCW using top tension. But the serrated pins are the real pin in the a**.

Try 1105 american padlock and the best padlock 6 pins first, then
7 pins that will keep you busy for awhile
and yes stay away from ul437 right now
make your way up hope this helps.
