newbie finding this a bit easy...

Postby racerboy59 » 10 Apr 2009 0:43

First of all, let me say i'm new to this sport and have only just started picking locks as a hobby since the last couple of days. After reading lots of valuable information on these forums, I managed to pick my first ever padlock in less than 10 minutes. And now I seem to get it open in about 2-5 seconds every time. It's got 4 pins and apparantly I only have to pick the 4th and 3rd pins and the lock just swings open. What's going on? This can't be normal, can it?

I'm using the Southord C500 basic set and have managed to pop open 4 locks so far. 2 have been fairly easy and straight forward, but I'm a bit inconsistent with one 5 pin lock. Is there any way to tell if it has got spools or other security measures installed?

Well you did not mention what locks you working on
is it master or just generic locks
sometimes you can tell if it's has security pins just by looking at the very first pin
You can tell if it's serrated-spool pin,but to really tell
how many security pins the lock has, you got it take them out
here you got more info about security pins hope this helps good luck.

OK I'm living in the UK so you may or may not recognise these locks. First one is a Halfords (own brand) 4 pin lock. The other is a kasp security lock. I'll try and get a picture anyway, see if it helps. I'd rather not take it apart, though as i'm not so confident i'll be able to put it back. Thanks for the link though.

I'm sorry. I wanted to change it, but it seems the forum doesn't have an edit button. MY apologies again.

K. In answer to your question, those locks probably wont come apart anyway
well, not without some drilling/cutting and possible destruction ;)

Some locks are easier than others just because of the key bitting,
I can't imagine halfords own to be particularily high security but you never know.

You might want to try your hand at a yale 5 pin door lock, like you find on
most front doors, the proper brand yales usually have a couple of security
pins in them. The cheaper ERA ones don't in my experience but they are good practice.

If you want to stick with padlocks, Abus, Yale and Chubb are decent ones
to look out for. Also look at the keys. The ones with a good difference in the
high/low bitting will be more of a challenge.

Hope that helps.

cheers mate. I'll try my door lock again. That was a pain to get open when I first started. Now I know why.
And looking back, the halfrauds key is has cuts of all the same height (all but 1). I mean a bump key would almost open it with normal operation.

I was wondering though, what's that little hole underneath where you put the key? The one you can see on one of my pictures.

The hole is usually there to let water drain out if the lock is outside or
gets wet for some reason.

Don't worry about the size of the pictures, it is easy to change their size.

I right-clicked onthem and click on "properties". It says they come from Imageshack, so if you go to imageshack and lock in again (if you logged out last time) and clcik on the picture. There you will find the option to resize them. Try 640 x 480, it will still probably be clear enough to see what's going on. When you have resized them, please save the changes and use the "replace" original if it gives you the option. This will mean all the links will stay the same and next time we visit this page, all the formatting will be back to normal and we will still be able to see all your pictures - You won't have to repost them again or anything like that!

Thanks!

Nice tip. But the only problem is I don't have an account. I uploaded it as a guest user.
I guess, a moderator can just delete the post with the pics, as they are not needed any more.

Don't worry about it too much. To be honest it would
be very easy for a mod to take the IMG tags out of
your post to turn them in to links and I cant see a reason
for this not to have happened yet.

Life goes on ;)

I would not want to see this post deleted - I think there is every chance that someone in the future might well find this useful, if they were to do a search for say "newbie""? Besides, it's part of LP101's "history" now!

I can't be sure since I'm not sure how this board has been set up, but there is a reasonable possibility that if you go to www.photobucket.com and enter the username and password you used for THIS website, then you may find that when you uploaded those photos, it created a photobucket account automatically for you with the same details.
