Lock Recommendations

Postby dbr » 14 Apr 2009 20:26

This is a little bit off topic, so I apologize for that, but this is probably the best place to get some questions answered.

I'm looking to replace some generic locks + dead bolts that were installed when my home was built. I'm pretty sure they are easy to pick and definitely susceptible to bumping. I'm interested in hearing some recommendations from the experts on what to replace in my home to improve the security. I've been reading about a BiLock design that is suposedly bump proof, but not sure about unpickable. I can't imagine anything is unpickable, with that in mind I would say what I'm looking for is 1. bump proof and 2. very very difficult to pick. Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I have never heard about a bilock being picked, and they are certainly bump proof. You could also get Abloy protec, or Schlage Primus, they are much better than a kwikset, and aren't too expensive.
<jkthecjer> this kwikset did not yield so easily

not easy, but it can be done.

Still a very very good lock and difficult to pick just like Medeco, Primus, ASSA and Abloy, so if the OP's fear is bored teenagers who can pick a file cabinet lock or a Schlage deadbolt, he'll still be safe, since picking any of these locks including the one in the video is something left for people with lots of experience.

cheers,

The Medeco's look interesting, but apparently a major flaw found a couple years back... Does anyone know if this is still an issue? Or how valid it even is...

It's not just the lock you need to look at. Putting a medeco or abloy on a standard door frame is like putting lipstick on a pig. You need to reinforce the doorframe as well. Jamb, hinges, bolt, frame, all of it is important. Not just the lock.

Well said! I will add that attention to the frame, jamb, hinges, AND door is MORE important than trying to find an "unpickable" lock. Burglars don't pick locks. The amount of locks "picked" vrs. the numbers of burglaries is almost statistically insignificant. Yeah, good quality locks have been picked in the hand, or on workbenches, but the success rate goes way down when the lock is actually on a door, working in real world conditions.

Thanks for all the responses and tips. Definitely appreciate it. I'll look more into physical door security and not focus entirely on the lock. It seems like getting a lock that is higher quality and bump key resistent + improving door security would be the way to go.
