Going crazy -- Lock I've never seen before.

Postby veecrawn » 20 Apr 2009 21:04

So today I went to the dollar shop and bought more lock to practice.

One of them is a CHEAP china crap but I've been unable to open it no matter how I go, I barely make any progress.

IT is NOT a pin lock. The key looks like this

_ _ _ _
| |_| |_| |_| |

So basically all the same height.

I have to turn the key and it will unlock the lock. Inside I saw some small things the key triggers when it turns on the top. I have tried to open this lock with a blank metal sheet without success.

I have no idea what this kind of lock is, never saw such before. I tried to push the little things on the top the key pushes while turning the key but it won't budge.

Anyone got any idea what these are? The name of it, and how to open them? The keys looks a bit like this

Are these used to open it? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

If you could take a picture of the lock, it would make identifying it much easier. However, I can tel you that those picks are called comb picks, and are used to overlift pins in pin tumbler locks.
<jkthecjer> this kwikset did not yield so easily

It's probably warded. You can search for 'warded lock' on Google but basically the mechanism inside the lock is just designed to keep the key from turning. There is just one switch inside the lock that opens it usually, but you have to have a key that fits the warding (or a small hook and patience) to find it.

Skeleton keys and their ilk are used to pick it.

No, you can cut down a key to make a skel key. you have to know which bits are necessary and which bits are ok to cut off.

cover your key with black marker pen, and then use it a lot and try to read the marker where its worn off.

do not cut away the parts that have a lot of the marker worn off, but any part of the key that does not have the marker worn off the working edges, can be cut away.

If you get it right, it will open the lock like a key,

Look at the top right photo, key looks like this?

If so, Ray has you on the right track. A set of warded picks look like this:

It's a good day when I learn something new.
