Whatever is cheap? Looking around, people usually seem to start with things like a master #1 or #3

Master 140 is pretty easy to. Or Yale FDA1 :0 Both locks will not set you back more than 8 bucks or so.

The best thing to start out with are residential deadbolts, something like a Kwikset or Schlage. These are great because you can take them apart and repin them to make them hard or easy, depending on your skill level. This lets you understand how it feels to pick a lock with just one pin, and you can remove any security pins to make it easier. Padlocks usually don't offer this, and the low-security padlocks are usually real easy to pick; you'll get bored of them pretty fast.

Double sided kwikset deadbolt should only run you about 10-15$ at any local hardware store.

you should start with Kwikset or Schlage
padlocks master #1 #3 #5
and make your way up
as you improve just add some security pins
to get you to the next level hope this helps.
