Want to get started, but know NOTHING Start here!

When I first got interested in lock picking,I knew absolutely nothing and I had a very hard time finding any information on the subject.I researched in bookstores and online but found VERY little useful information. It took me nearly 4 years to become as proficient as I am today.I am posting this today to save you from this anguish and so you can get started picking this week and become fairly proficient in under two months.

Purchase these items: http://www.selfdefenseproducts.com/Visu ... 16527.html

This is a no-nonsense book that will familiarize you with the operation of the most common locks today, how and why picking works and hands-on exercises that will get you started picking in under a week.

http://www.selfdefenseproducts.com/14-P ... 16148.html

You will be able to pick approximately 98% of all locks with this set!

After these items arrive, purchase the following locks which can be found at any The Home Depot or Lowe's
home improvement store.

Kwikset deadbolt single cylinder(Any finish):

http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/sto ... =100096396

One of the easiest deadbolt locks to pick and disassemble.

Master No.1 No.3 or No.7 laminated padlock:

http://masterlock.com/cgi-bin/style_sea ... le_id=C311

Some of the easiest padlocks on the market to pick.

Wafer Camlock for desks or drawers: http://www.magsecurity.com/products.aspx?id=219&mid=13

Beginners will almost without a doubt, pick this lock on your their attempt!

If you ever have any questions about locks and/or lock picking, feel free to PM me or anyone else on this forum,as we will be glad to answer any questions you may have!

Best Regards,

Alex.

Same here, I was amazed how little I knew. I started with the MIT guide however and watched many movies on youtube. I was able to learn how to take apart a basic lock and repin it through watching videos. I've watched the video version of the book you mentioned and it is nice to see how the internals of a lock work. Still even if you know how something works it takes practice to do it!

For someone brand new, even fewer picks could do the job. Digital_blue's training exercise here is really my favorite. I'm getting a cutaway lock that can be repinned I'm guessing finally seeing inside and what I'm doing will allow me to get a mental visual faster then normal.

I'd love extreme basic information that I can't find in one place here. For example the use of all those lock picks, some I still don't know like the snake one looking one.

I think this the BEST guide of all and all forum members can learn something here: Lockpicking for beginners!. This is how NOT to pick a lock.

Unlocke -

Think of the snake rake like a combination of a snap gun and a variable saw tooth.

As you pull it quickly in and out of the lock it snaps the pins up to the sheer-line. If you move it slowly with some vibration and changing the pitch and height it works the pins up and down hoping to catch the right ones at the right time at the right height. You're really not concerned with individual pins but rather trying to decode the whole lock through pseudo-random brute-force.

If you have one cranky pin that just won't go where it needs to, switching to the S-rake/snake rake while keeping what you have set can sometimes pop that last one into place too.

It can be the absolute fastest [hand picked] way through cheap locks, but generally has diminishing returns in "pick resistant" locks with security pins (they're really designed to be the answer against raking).

Finally! :P Now I know what each of my picks is used for, that one pick, I couldn't find information on its use.

Just don't take my word as gospel. I see people out there raking through security locks like mad. [shrug] Never works for me. I'm not generally a big fan of raking locks anyway.
