Abus 85/30 help

Postby wifiuk » 5 May 2009 16:29

I know its got mushroom pins in it, im very much a beginner. I have SPP'd a few locks so far, but not mushroom pins.

its a Abus 85C/30

Any tips i just cant seem to do it, even with light tention.

its a tight fit too even with my slimline picks.

Oh man! If you don't get it picked you're never gonna get those keys off of there! :P @ Unlisted

Are you able to get a false set yet? Do you know what a false set is about?

Mushrooms are a little tougher than a straight spool - but not much. The first step is to get a false set.

Yup, or more specifically, all the drivers will rise and fall a little without any felt spring tension. The lock feels like it should be picked, but it's not. The drivers rising and falling without spring tension is important, because you can also be describing overpicking, where the drivers are bound up above the shearline preventing the lock from opening as surely as if it weren't picked at all.

A false set is when you have the mushroom/spool resting halfway on the shear line, like so:

The plug rotates as if the pin has set on the shear line, yet the pin is actually still blocking the rotation of the plug. Hence, a "false set". :)

All you have to do is, when you set a pin, continue to push it upwards... if the plug starts to counter-rotate, it means you've found one of the mushroom pins. If it doesn't set properly when you push it further like this, take a mental note of which one it is so you remember not to ignore it later.

The drivers don't fall or the upper pins don't? If the drivers don't, you've over-picked - start again. If the pins don't, you have a false set, which is the first step. As Solomon alluded to, you need to go back over them and let the plug counter-rotate a hair so you can kind of coax them up into there.

but its really tight in there like i have to have the pick at a 45 degree angle or something or is that just me doing it wrong? it just wont fit in otherwise and also with the tention wrench makes room even tighter.

You might want to try placing your tension wrench at the top of the keyway if it's too tight in there. I have some wrenches that I've chopped down really short so they'll sit fairly flush at the top of the keyway for small locks or locks that I need more room in there for.

Yes, it's tight and obstructed. Unlike Master, they didn't make that lock to increase your self confidence. :) Welcome to real locks. ;)

As for the abus 85/50 lock originally mentioned in this thread here is a thread by a really talented guy I've come across. Here looks like a deviant but he is very professional and has some great self help videos:

Hope this helps!

So I doubt this is really the correct spot to post this but I noticed that abus locks was the topic and decided to throw it in...

I was zipping through some ebay pick vids as I like to watch the extremely high security locks being taken down (gives me some self satisfaction due to my lockpicking inadequecies, this one was particularily delightful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj4myR2XlWc )

I noticed this video of a guy picking an abus with what seems like a DIY pick/decoder made specifically for this type of abus. Unlike the lock in this thread the abus in question seems to be some form of wafer lock with 9 wafers. The guy gives a nice break down of the lock (and of course a lovely soundtrack). Was wondering if anyone had any comments on the pick he used?

You were there in the room? That must have been pretty sweet. I've never seen anyone do a destructive bypass of a lock before but that seemed awfully fast . That bit was unreal.
