Picking a vertical tubular lock - HELP!

Postby tripleblowfish » 9 May 2009 21:15

Hello everyone! Ive searched left and right to try and figure this out. I recently purchased a southord 7 pin tubular lock pick. I'm amazed with the results that I have done so far. Every horizontal tubular lock Ive encountered has been compromised within 10 seconds. One was 3 seconds flat! I have however, been stuck wondering about this one lock.

It is a tubular 7 pin lock with "G1" printed on the top. However, this lock is vertical. Meaning, instead of pushing forward to go into the lock, Im pushing down. I just cant seem to get it to spin open! I can move them very slightly sometimes. I havent been able to spin it completely to open though.

Is there a difference in the way the pins move in a vertical tubular lock compared to a horizontal one?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

um.... when the lock is in your hand the position is your choice. Otherwise, you have made a fundamental error.

Heres an image of one. They are so much harder to do it seems like. I can feel the pins going up and down as I move the pick.

I tried just now and got one spinning around and around until finally it wouldnt spin again. But it didnt open completely yet so I feel like its only halfway cracked. It is pretty loose though. It built up some confidence in this job!

Heres a picture of one.

I can think of lot's of other things this could be. Like a dryer. Or possibly a soap dispenser.

Rust around the left top edge of the door. I'm goin' for Washer. And fortunately not the coin box. This looks like access to the feed and switch.

So we can deduce that he lives in an apartment complex, or goes to a really old laundromat. I vote the former, just as a gut feeling.

Tip1: resist the powerful urge to pick every lock you walk by with your fancy new tubular pick.

Unless you're a Coke machine service guy or a washing machine maintenance guy for an apartment complex, or a locksmith, there is no real "hack value" for hobby lockpickers to have a tool that does 90% of the picking for you.

keep it legal

Just call a locksmith, they can come over and make you a new key.
