Bump Keys do not work on newer tumbler locks?

Postby TickTockMyLock » 16 May 2009 20:34

Just bought a Schlage. Grade 2 Ansi Certificate. Key cylinder resists knock-ins (bumping?).

And a Kwikset Defiant Grade 3 Ansi.

I've tried over an hour and my keys do not work on it. The keys are not the problem. Are these locks resistant or is it just my technique? Getting frustrating.

if you dont know if its your technique how can you be so sure its not the keys? do the pins touch the key when you insert it? are the pins not touching the key, are you using too much tension? are you hitting it too hard? :?: maybe put the lock down for half an hour and have a break then try coming back to it and im sure youl crack it mate.
if everyone who tried something new liked it but didnt bother telling anyone else there would never be anything new to try...

Does it say anything on the package about bump-resistant ?

I think some companies are trying to make it harder to bump their locks.

Have you ever bumped open any lock? Did you make your own bump keys and bump hammer? Can you pick the locks you are tring to bump open? Are the locks Deadbolts? If you answered no to some of those questions that could explain why you not able to bump open those locks. A friend of mine bought his bump keys on line and I can tell you the KW1 version was cut too low and was going into the lock too far. I have had a hard time on kik kwicksets because the knobs were so loose it wouldnt bump open.

These are the keys and the lock i'm practicing it on. i bought the keys from bump j. One of the keys I modified the tip and shoulder and the other one I left as is. Tried minimal movement one with the modified and tried pull out with each of them.

I bought the door locks from Home Depot for like $25. I bought a Defiant Kwikset and Schlage.

Theres nothing bump resistant about either lock beyond what might be a difficult bitting. Do you still have the original keys?

Does home depot even still carry that Defiant junk? Those aren't security devices. My biggest fear picking one would be shattering it with the tension wrench.

Yes I still have the original keys. The spacing is correct but when I put the two keys on top of each other the points and dips aren't exactly lined up. does that make a difference ?

It makes a difference if the cuts don't allow the bottom pins to rest at the lowest point when the key is bumped and fully inserted. Alternatively, they might push bottom pins too high and not let top pins break at shear line. It isn't a big deal if they are barely off (1 mm or so), but if it is excessive it will matter.

Yes. they are still carrying them. Not only that, but sometimes the entire flat (of however many locks come in a flat) is keyed alike. Sign.

You should be able to bump those locks with practice and the correct tool.

They are not considered 'bump resistant' much less 'bump proof'. The only schlage that I know of that would be difficult to bump would be the Primus which has a sidebar.

I've tried hundreds of times now. I haven't gotten the regular defiant kwikset lock but i did get the deadbolt once! I tried mimicking the time i did it but so far no go.

I really hope it's not going to be like this forever.

Maybe I need a bump hammer? I've been using a plastic spatula and removed the spatula part and taped a heavy socket to the end.

Your "bump hammer" may be too heavy...

I've opened the deadbolt kwikset lock ONCE and ONLY ONCE. I use the pull-out method.

What does that mean?

Does that mean the keys are NOT the problem? Does it mean my technique? If I get really good is it matter of skill or luck? Is it just by chance the shear line matches and 1 out of 500 times is normal?

I still have not gotten the schlage and kwikset normal locks yet - the ones I bought at HD.

All depends on your technique and the lock.

I know locksmiths who can bump "almost any" lock that is bumpable- yet you get the one with hard pinning, etc, and its like they are a total n00b...

Try lockpicking, put down the bumpkeys, you will have a much more rewarding time.
