Mounting cheap locks upside down to resist bumping???

Postby cds333 » 23 May 2009 2:29

Will an upside-down-mounted lock bump open as easily as a right-side-up-mounted lock?

I remember hearing somewhere that an USD-mounted lock is harder to pick than a RSU-mounted one because of gravity 'n all, just wondering if that is true IYO, and if that also applies to bumpability of same?

Types in question are standard HomeDepot/Lowes locks (Kwikset, Defiant, etc)

Thanks in advance!

One bad/binded spring and your lock suddenly becomes very inoperable...

I have picked lots of upside down mounted locks, and although I am not a bumper, I have also bumped upside down locks, I have seen no difference, what I do know is that an upside down lock has more problems, like the last poster said, spring problems, also dirt and debris. But thats about it when it comes to bypass.

Over here in the UK and around Europe, 90% of locks are of the "upside down" type (search for "Euro Cylinder" in Google images. In my experience it doesn't really matter how they are mounted, if they bump, they'll bump anyway.

Bumping relies on inertia, not on gravity. If you study the mechanics of bumping you'll know the answer to your question.

If locks are placed upside down, it may be easier to pick because gravity is working against the pins. However installing a lock sideways may make the lock harder to pick.

:?
It's just what you are used to doing.
Picking sideways might feel a bit weird, but the pins are so light that gravity hardly has any influence on picking.
The only real difference is that when the lock is mounted upside down you do not have the key pin falling down again after the set.
