Broken pick

Postby cyber » 2 Jun 2009 22:54

Hey all.

i just wanted to ask about pin and tumblers security.

i have been picking for a short time now, just with basic 4-5 pin, tumbler padlocks. (the brand was master if you wish to know)

but i decided i wanted to get the feel of different sorts of locks, i went out an bought a lock wood tumbler lock.
i figured it wouldn't be to much different so as per usual i inserted my home made torque wrench and pick,
-torque wrench was just a filed down allan key.
-my pick was a old knife sanded and cut down, it was just a basic hook pick.

anyway, these tools had never been a problem before, i had picked several basic pin and tumblers.
so i started picking, but not even 20 seconds after inserting the pick, i realized something was wrong, so i removed the pick, and it had broken.
the whole end, that is the hook/pin pushing part of the pick had snapped off.

my question is.
is there any known security in some of the p&t locks, that is known to do this?

thanks all for listening.

No, no locks do this. How would they distinguish between a key and a pick?

What probably happened is that you are using too much force, or it was just your pick's time to go. That you made it by hand might also mean that you didn't make it as durable as a commercial pick; did you ever retemper/bend/etc the pick?

Don't worry even experienced pickers break a few picks now and then datagram is right, maybe too much force? I have broken several picks, some just get weak over time, others I have actually got stuck and then broke them, I am a little rough with things at times. Keep making your own picks, just make them better and stronger as you go. Good Luck!

your home made hook pick may be too thin.. Or it may not be strong enough.. You could possibly make another hook pick out of hacksaw blades which are made out of carbon steel, (flexible and strong).

knives are tempered with brittleness and grinding and dipping(in water) makes them more brittle, to make it as a picktool will just give you as what you get. a shorter life. however keep on making with other kind of material. browse on some of the threads here you will have a great info and advice for your correct material. regards.
