Hey all, As I'm pretty new to lockpicking and especially to this forum, so I don't know much about picking yet. I've been searching for vids on how to pick with spool pins, and they looked quite obvious untill i tried it myself. They say you have to pick it to false set and than pick ur spool pins. I've been trying to do this on an ABUS n55/40 (i know this one might be a lil too hard for me) and the spool pin is the first pin. As soon as I go in with my pick, I touch this pin and goes to false set immediately without touching the other pins. As I understand, you have to pick the other pins in order to get a false set. I've been trying to pick the spool pin first and then the other pins, but the key pin of the spool pin won't come up anymore. If any of you know a solution, I'd be glad to hear it Cheers

Welcome Loolooke. I'm sure we can help you out with picking this lock. But can you please take a picture of the lock in question for us please.

Feather light tension. As you lift on a false set spool, the wrench will be forced back to allow for the lip of the spool to pass the shear line. If you are using too much tension, you won't be able to get it past that point.

thanks guys, that was really quick. TigerDragon: I already tried feather light tension, i just think it's odd that i get a false set by only touching one pin...

ABUS locks do tend to go into a false set very quickly. There most likely are 4 spools in this lock so you'll have to work through them one by one. The reason a picture is asked of your lock is for proof that it is your lock and it's not in use

Thanks for a pick, with the picture of a key. It is just as I had suspected. The first cut is the deepest cut. Based on this info and the info in your first post. If it starts to turn when you only touch the first pin, then that pin is going to be picked to the sheer line.
So, after you pick that first pin you need to leave it alone and move on to the second pin. Which is going to be the hardest pin to pick in that lock. You will have to lift that pin all the way up while using really light tension, you will need to let the tension wrench turn back while lifting the second, third and fourth pins. The trickiest part on the lock you have is not lifting that first pin any higher while trying to lift the second pin, I recommend using a hook pick. And you may need to put the tension wrench in the top of the key way, so you can get your pick under that annoying deep first pin.
Hope that helps, good luck. Oh yeah, if you still can't get it open. Try getting another lock, same brand/model, just without a really deep first cut. For practice and then come back to this one.

I was so close to getting it, i was at the 4th pin, i tried to lift it, released tension, but the force of the pin clicking into place caused my tension wrench to hop out, letting the lock reset . I was using the wrench in the top, so it wasn't very secure. Any tips on this?

Some people like bottom tension to overcome this problem. But if you like top tension like I do. What you will want is a vice or something to hold the lock for you. Then you can hold on to your tension wrench with two fingers. This way you can lighten up the tension until there isn't any tension at all and still hold the tool where you want it. Or ....atleast you won't end up dropping the tension wrench on the floor when it pops out.

You can also grind down the end of the tension wrench so when fully inserted it doesn't interfere with the first pin and lies flush with the body of the lock. That will stop it wanting to pop out and I've done it to a number of my wrenches specifically for that purpose.
