Shotty Master Locks?

Postby LTblueknight » 23 Jun 2009 0:05

So I picked up a bunch of master locks today, and I managed to pick every single one! :D

The locks I bought were master 3DEX, 40DPF, 140DLH, and 141DLF. I also bought 2 crappy "SECURE" brand locks from the dollar store. Anyways I've been practicing on everything almost all day, and I've noticed something strange.

On my master 40 (The big round disc one), I noticed that there is actually only one pin that I have to pick, and the lock pops open. I was surprised to say the least, because this lock was the most expensive and intimidating.

Likewise on my master 141 I have the same problem. Only 1 pin needs to be lifted and the lock pops open...

Anyways, I was wonder how is this possible when these locks have 5 pins and 4 pins, respectively. Has anyone else had this happen? It must be somewhat common considering out of the 4 master locks I bought, 2 of them are like this. I'm going to return them tomorrow, and change them for something else to practice on.

By the way, the dollar store locks are proving hardest to open.. The only pick that fits inside is my small half diamond.

can you post a picture of the keys?
it might have something to do with the key bitting.

I'm gonna agree with this. Chances are they're all low lift pins with just one slightly higher than the rest. I have a euro cylinder like this... you pick the pin at the back and it just opens right away. You said the lock was expensive so I'm gonna assume that it has fairly high tolerances, but if the gaps between the key & driver pins are all sitting very close to the shear line this won't matter much. A gentle rocking motion will set all the pins very quickly, without you even trying. Next time you're buying locks to practice on, take a look at the keys. You can tell whether it's going to be easy or not just by looking at those. ;)
