I'm not totally sure if this is in the right section because I'm new... But I need some help. I'm a beginner to lock picking and am using a bobby pin as a hook pick, and have a piece of metal that came from this type of pen

that I am using as a tension wrench. Not very proficient tools but it's what I had. This lock has been giving me some trouble for quite some time, and I should probably be using an easier lock to start on. The first pin is a spool pin and looking at the key it's shear line is near the bottom so it doesn't have to be pushed very far. But the rest need to be pushed down most the way. And that's where I'm having problems because the slightest touch to the first pin gives it a false set and I can't push any of the pins down.
Thanks for the help.
