Padlock 'lifting'

Postby sham » 12 Jul 2009 14:08

I have noticed that I can pick several padlocks in 2-3 seconds using a diamond pick and a tension tool, finding the pin closest to the end of the plug lifting it and then lifting the the pick up. I have successfully tried this on:
Masterlock Hardened
A regular masterlock
Some cheapo padlock

I'm curious as to why this might be? Are the front pins of simmilar length? Is this actually some kind of bypass? Has anyone else noticed this?

As a down side I haven't gotten good at actually picking locks since I have figured out how to abuse these masterlocks :(.

Likely the body of the pick lifts the pin close enough to shear. I've noticed this on some locks as well.

it could be that you are not lifting the last pin, but the locking dog which is the next thing behind the plug, this is the same kind of locking dog that can be shimmed, you cannot do this on a ball locking system.

...or if you are giving it a slight torque, you might be raking the first pins as you are pushing the pick to bottom

I tend to agree with Wizer and Raimundo on this one. If you are actually touching the first couple of pins with the diamond or even the body of the pick they may just set "automatically". This won't work on properly constructed locks though since they have a very high tolerance for picking and won't just set upon touching them (they need to be precisely aligned).

Why don't you get some other padlocks like Guard, Yale, Tri-circle, they shouldn't be to hard on you and still can be challenging if you buy the top of line onces :)
