Relearning to pick after breaking a finger on the right hand

Postby unlocke » 16 Jul 2009 20:03

I had the right part of my right hand slammed in door hard enough that it fractured the small finger on my right hand. Long story short I've been unable to pick locks or even try for the past month. I mostly hold locks in my hand so with a bandages on my right hand I could not even try learning to use my left hand to pick.

With less wrapping on my hand now and I'm and able to pick again but it's embarrassing how terrible I'm doing. Without the daily practice of the past, what used to take a minutes is taking me five or ten and some locks are now unpickable where I used to be able to open then in a few minutes time. In fact I'm going to need to stop picking again because I think my right hand needs more time to heal. Fractures are not fun... middle of next month my hand will have fully recovered.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience on how to quickly get back my lost skill after stopping for a month or so due to injury or other reasons. I only started picking locks back in march so my skill is limited to begin with.

Here is my "injury" thread, along with some others.

I'd recommend you just keep picking, at least you can pick still...

Must have forget to link the thread I didn't see on search either. I am picking now that I can but I'm not spending as much time until it heals.

Let me first state that this is not BY FAR as serious as what you and unlisted have gone / are going trough.

I cut part of my thumb of a little while ago (not more that a 1/10 to 1/8 inch) and since then I have kinda lost my feel for picking. However as the wound heals over and the skin begins to regenerate I am noticing it's getting better and better. Since I am missing a small part of my thumb the feel will never be the same but I am confident I will be back on track in just a matter of weeks.

I don't think it's about getting the feel back likeit use to be, but getting use to your "new hand / finger". It won't be easy but once you are fully healed I am expecting that it will only takes weeks for you to be back on track ;)

Beyond picking you are lucky to be alive. I don't even want imagine how much that would have hurt. In 19 days I should be healed and I'll be back to it. I hope you have recovered since then? If had a picture of my hand a month ago it was just swollen.

I might be better off then you. Only my right pinky finger was fractured. The pain was having a splint on it and having the whole better part of my right hand immobile for 2 weeks (fractures hurt of course and badly but nothing compared to unlisted though!). Bones heal but any nerve or tendon damage, is irreparable. My pinky finger is already damaged from years ago. So I'm lucky it was that finger and not my index or ring finger.
