combination locks stands/mounts in Europe?

Postby lajos » 27 Sep 2004 10:54

Hi all,

I'm not new here, but I forgot my username/password, so I'm starting new. Hope you don't mind.

I have been practicing manipulation on combination locks (S&G 6741) for a few months now, and have successfully opened it 2-3 times without cheating (i.e.: giving up and checking the gates). I strongly suspect the wheel 3 to shadow the other wheels 3/4 of the time or more, making my life very very long and difficult. I only really successfully picked the lock when the wheel 3 wasn't shadowing anything (ie: getting a 'sharp' drop in readings of about 1/2 a reading instead of crappy little gradual drops that go away when my eyes water out from sheer exhaustion).
However, I mounted the lock in a piece of wood without properly setting the whole thing up (ie: the drill hole isn't quite the right size and I didn't take all the measurements I should have before screwing things in). I used superglue to fix the front...
My guess is that it may be the cause of a lot of my troubles.

Could anyone please tell me how to get a proper mount/stand for a combination lock to practice on? I have scoured the ebays of this world and never found any, or not delivering to Europe in the only instance I found one. I am not interested in the $128 mounts from lockmaster.

Thanks a lot in advance to anyone who could help me out. Believe me, I've been looking for a long time for one, but always meet dead ends.
Has anyone successfully aquired one somewhere in Europe?

Cheers,
L.

Consider the installation instructions on the S&G site:

I have those instructions already (came with the lock). But they assume that you already have holes pre-drilled in the safe door to install your lock. There are no installation templates with holes sizes/measurements for installation without any pre-drilled holes.
Screwing in the dial ring and being off by a fraction of a milimeter can put the dial off centre (hence my superglue technique which gives you a small amount of time to re-centre the dial ring before it sets).

So, if anyone has ever acquired a stand or mount, please let me know where :(

Cheers,
L.

I am not sure I agree with your assessment.

The only semi-critical problem I've ever run into was the length of the spindle tube. I presume your problem is with the dial ring screws and not the spindle tube or spindle hole.

I've mounted 6700 series in simple homemade wooden stands and had no problems with marking/drilling the holes.

Take two boards of comfortable size, run a dado across one and glue the two together. That's your stand. Make your own paper template off the dial ring and use it as a drilling guide. Not all dial rings have the same hole alignment. Your dial ring template SHOULD have come with the dial ring and not the lock.

I am not sure you'll source/purchase something this easy to make.

In that case I'll try again.

Thanks for your help,

Good afternoon lajos,

I understand that hzatorsk has suggested that you make your own wooden lock block, but if you don't have the time there is a block which you can purchase from your wholesaler. I shall pm you a link.

Hope that it helps

I buy small wall safes, maybe 2-4 brick sized safes which are small enough to place on a table or on your lap whilst practicing on. If you want to swap a lock around, obviously you can do.

In addition to that I'd also recommend what others have and just get yourself a nice piece of oak or something and mount a few locks in that.

The last time I looked at the Lockmasters catalog they had a plastic mount for $10.25. It's on page 179 at the bottom:
http://www.lockmasters.com/download/04C ... _tools.pdf
It may not be in europe but it's still less than $128. Btw, some of the pdf links in their catalog may change during the next days as I just send them two mail about all the errors I found in the links to their catalog pdfs.
It's not the tools that open the lock. It's me.

You mean the retrofit mounting plate?

That's a good idea.

Anyway, I will look into seeing how and if you can get lockmasters stuff in Europe.

Although $65 for the mounted Lagard or ILCO is not that bad a deal I think compared to the S&G.

Nope, down in the lower right corner it says something about a plastic mount, but there's no picture.
