Picking a Shlage....????

Hey,
I have recently mastered picking the master lock no. 3 and the quickset deadbolt

and i have tried a shlage deadbolt. The only problem with the shlage is the safety guard is kind of in the way so i can't fell pins as well :cry:

. I have tried scrubbing the lock and using a half diamond and a short feeler pick. With the diamond and feeling the pick always falls to the bottom of the lock and i can feel worth a darn. HOW DO YOU PICK A SLAGE WITH THIS FEATURE? Also it doesn't seem like the pins are binding as well as a kwikset. Any tips on this?

The schlage deabolt I have has 4 spool pins, significantly increasing the difficulty of picking compared to locks like quickset and master padlocks. The MIT guide has some good suggestions on how to deal with them.

Never seen a Schlage with a dust cover...... :lol:

As far as the feel, schlages are better made, the feel is different. You will find the pin movements tighter, therefore use lighter tension on the plug.
And for god sakes, quit scrubbing the thing. I bet you are getting brass dust on your picks arent you?

so if it's a dust cover - can't you take it off? or are you picking a lock that's actually attached to your door..... again.....?

Well i have no practice locks, so for now the doors all i have to pick.

Varjeal sells an excelent Schlage practice lock package - you can start with just one or two pins to get used to the restrictive keyway, then go from there, once you've mastered 6 pins, then you can add security pins.

I very very highly recommend getting that kit or something similar - being able to take the lock apart and start with only a few pins is an extremely valuable learning experience.

Also, some people use a grinded down Schlage key blank for the tension tool.

something you may want to do until you get the feel for them.
