Questions about using a Dremel to expose lock

Postby Kodack » 28 Sep 2004 23:13

I think it would be cool to have a part of the keyway exposed so that you could see the pins and the keyway. You know, for demostrating how a lock works and for practice with picking.

I am pretty sure they have 'see through' type locks for training but what I was thinking was I'd like to dremel some of the outside of the lock off.

I'm worried about it messing with the tolerances and the shear line.

Has anybody on this board attempted it before? Any advice?

PS. One more thing, there are some VERY knowledgable people here. I was wondering, how many of you are locksmiths by trade?

I'm doing it as a hobby.

skold had a nice go at it here:

I remember someone else doing it - uh... it was redish.... can't remember who though.. I'm sure more searching would return it.

also see this site:

I'm a locksmith.

As for your question, I believe another fellow here did something very similar to a padlock. Did a good job too if I remember correctly.

Do a search for cut away locks, or just cut away. That should turn something up.

I've got a job as an apprentice locksmith.. :)

Cut-away locks are awesome for practicing, i would recommend some sites to check out.. but it seems that the other fellows already did that
