Help needed in finding the value of an antique safe

Postby happycetacean » 23 Aug 2009 22:46

I have a friend who is looking to sell an antique safe. She writes:

We have an antique safe in our garage and a guy wants to buy it. It stands 49" tall by 36" across and the name is Strubinger. It is out of an old old bank. It has a dial combonation lock on the front. I have looked and looked on internet to try to find out what it is worth.

Can you guys help me value it? I have asked her if she has the combination to access it and if it is in good condition, etc.

Thanks,

HC

The first thing I will say, get some clear photos of the safe. Also, if someone is offering to purchase they either know its worth $$$ OR- they are like me, and collect safes. (although my collection is still small)

I wrote my friend to send this:

1. Photos, photos, and more photos of the safe.
2. Do you have the combination to open it? If so, take photos of internals and of the locking mechanism from the inside, of the side of the door (door jamb), and the locking pins in the door itself.
3. Condition of the safe?
4. Any identification marks or serial #s, etc. on the safe?
5. Proof you own the safe - send one photo of the safe closed and one photo of the safe open with a card with the words cleary showing: "HAPPYCETACEAN @ LP101 joined June 21, 2009 1:44 AM"

I did this last part for your benefit.

If you are wanted to purchase it because you like antiques, that's great.

However, keep in mind that antique safes have very little or no value with regard to burglary or fire resistance, so don't plan on it actually protecting your valuables.
