Hey guys, I'm new to lock picking and have bought a set of picks. I have a schlage primus that I'd like to be able to pick eventually, although I think it will take a while (weeks? months?) until I get to that level (as I understand, it's a high security lock). There's the background information, here are my questions: 1. What tools do I need to pick the Schlage Primus? Is the set I have ( http://www.lockpickshop.com/PXS-17.html) adequate? If not, what else will I need in terms of tools? 2. What books, if any, should I get to help my learning progress as quickly as possible. I have a pdf copy of Locks, Safes, and Security, but I haven't looked at it yet. Is that all I will need, or do you recommend something else?

Whoa now. Nothing wrong with setting the bar high, but for a total beginner the Primus is somewhere in outer space. Master locks are easy enough, Kwiksets are fun, Brinks is a good step up to some security pins, American Lock has some even tougher security drivers. Start here and work your way up.

Sorry, I don't think I was very clear. I don't expect to be able to pick a Primus right away or even in the near future. I'm just wondering if the tool set I have is adequate for the job or if I'll need additional tools in the future. If anyone can answer this I'd appreciate it.
Also, are there any books I should get, or am I fine with what the one I have, Locks, Safes, and Security?

Well, I would suggest you begin by actually BUYING Locks, Safes, and Security.

The Primus is - as you proffered - a high security lock, and as such picking infoormation is only in the Advanced forums. Hang out, take part in some good discussions, and you can ask for access. You'll like the site.
LSS is a great book. I am reading Tobias Open in 30 Seconds, which I also recommend. High Security Mechanical Locks by Pullford is another great one. Both should be at your library.

The tools you have may or may not be able to pick this lock, so far as I know, nobody has picked one of these, you would have to have years of practice in picking locks before you could attempt one of these, and even then, it would be a job. Why are you starting out with this lock? It doesn't make sense. But if you must, good luck in your efforts.

Sorry I didn't put this in earlier: I'm not starting with the Primus, but I have one, and it is the highest level lock I have access to, so I am interested in learning how to pick it. I was just wondering if what I have is adequate for the job or if I'll need more tools. Don't worry, I don't plan on attempting the Primus for a while. And sfi72, I was looking for help, not moralism. Please don't post unless you're looking to offer the former.

The Primus has been picked. I have one too. It's a noble goal.
For the record, we take ethics VERY seriously here, and be prepared to be preached to if you steal. We aren't interested in thieves here, as I am sure you can imagine.

First of all, don't tell me what to post. Secondly if you were to spend 5 minutes on google, you could easily find documents about how the lock works and make a determination for yourself, as to whether or not the tools you have are proper for the job.

Without stepping into advanced territory, I think it is safe to say: "hard to say". I know of people who are very close to picking a fully pinned Primus with nothing more than basic tools; however, there are also multiple active investigations into specialized tools of varying complexity. I'm not going to wade into the rest of this mess, but sfi72 is a known and respected picker, and was probably more gentle in his response than a lot of people would have been.

Marc is one of us, so this isn't about moralism, this is about community. If you aren't willing to respect the work Marc has done, you're going to find a lot of doors closed to you when it comes to getting help out of us.
I'm not here to lecture you, whatsoever, just understand that you're making a choice.

I had a brand new primus, I traded it to a member here, I thought that he would get more use out of it because he probably has the ability to pick it if anybody can, It was way more for me to take on, so I let it go. Who has picked one of these, did Marc? I know he has bumped them, that's public information, but have they really already been picked, whoever did this is a very smart person in my book!

He says "I have a pdf copy of Locks, Safes, and Security" in his opening post. dg
